£25 addition to the Salary of the Dispenser employed in the Hospital, who, with a large family, has stood for 7 years on the small Salary of £75 per Annum, and always had a good character from the late and present Colonial Surgeons.

96. The last increase, viz., £50 to the Salary of the Clerk in the Audit Office, by which it is again raised to what it was before 1855, viz., £350. And here I may be permitted to avail myself of the opportunity thus afforded me, perhaps for the last time, most respectfully to accord my opinion as to the insufficiency of the remuneration offered by the local Government to their servants, particularly to such as are in responsible posts, such as the Audit Office, the Treasury.
Such posts require persons of superior education, experience, and ability, than are required for gentlemen who are only required to act chiefly as copyists, or at any rate who have not so much responsibility and headwork as are required from Accountants and such like.
